One-Day Seminar
“Theater, Performance, and Political Life in Iberian Cultures”
March 13, 2019
Theater, Performance, and Political Life in Iberian Cultures will be a one-day Seminar at Rutgers University-Newark on March 13, 2019. The goal of the Seminar is to create a critical dialogue of the multifarious connections between politics and performance that, at the same, tackles the indivisible links of theater, performance and politics. Abstracts by December 17, 2018.
As Richard Schechner – one of the founders of performance studies – defines it, this Seminar understands “performance” as a practice that encompasses theatrical spectacles as well as street performance, performance art, performance music, and quotidian enactments of political and social identities and issues.
Topics of interest include:
1. Ideologies
2. Audiences
3. Comedy and Politics
4. History and Politics
4. Counterculture
5. Polis and Politics
6. Exiles, War and Political Repression
7. Structural similarities or features between politics and performance
8. Concrete set of events and practices in which politics, theater and performance are inseparable

jeduprey@rutgers.newark.edu and jotacastro@gmail.com no later than December 17, 2018.
