Juan Hernando Vázquez

Juan Hernando Vázquez (jhernando@ucdavis.edu) obtained his BA and MA in Spanish Language and Literature in 2001 at the Universidad de Murcia. In addition to his interest for the Hispanic culture, he has a deep love for the theatrical arts; thus in 2001, he was accepted into the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático in Madrid, where he earned a BA in Theatrical Arts, Acting. In 2012, Juan pursued a PhD with his final dissertation “Making Memory: Mass Graves, Perpetrators, and Concentration Camps in Contemporary Spanish Theater” at the University of California. He has published articles, reviews, and several interviews related to the theatre world. His acting experience includes performing in productions such as Presas, written by Ignacio del Moral and Verónica Férnandez, and directed by Ernesto Caballero, former Director of the National Dramatic Center; Making Memory, an original dramaturgy that combines several texts about the Spanish Civil War that was performed during a small tour in the United States in 2017; and Desde lo invisible (From the invisible), the winner of a Max prize — the Max’s are Spain’s Olivier or Tony awards — about disabilities. Hernando Vázquez also co-directed and acted as the main character in El coloquio de los perros by Miguel de Cervantes, with the Grupo de Teatro La Poltrona, a theater group formed by the Spanish Department at UC, Davis. Currently, he lives in Barcelona where he is researching about “cancel culture” in the theatre.
